Erupting out of Naples, an authentic pizzeria is introducing Leeds to a mountain of flavours. Founder and Chef Pasquale moved here in 2018 after growing up and learning his craft in the Italian city that created pizza – and now Leeds are being treated to a taste of his homeland at his own restaurant, Vesuvius.
Named because Pasquale’s family home stands at the bottom of Mount Vesuvius, the historic site and the traditional values of Naples are honoured through the authenticity and craft of his food. Pasquale had worked and trained as a pizza chef there, and since moving to the UK, has dedicated time and attention to perfecting his pizzas.
Having spent a couple of years elevating his skills in pizza restaurants of Leeds, it was time to standalone and stand out. Bringing a slice of his old home to his new city, Vesuvius opened in Garforth in 2021, feeding the suburb with authentic Neapolitan pizzas and other delicious Naples staples.
For Pasquale, it is essential to use the traditional techniques he has studied and mastered, as well as the finest Italian produce. The dough is handmade in the restaurant everyday using only the best authentic ingredients sourced from Italy and the pizzas are cooked expertly in a stone baked oven.
The base of the pizza is highly digestible, it has a light airy crust and great texture. The toppings begin with the classics, San Marzano tomato sauce and fior di latte mozzarella for the true test of quality, a fantastic Margherita. It then moves on to an array of options, from Napoli salame to portobello mushroom, choose from a 12 inch Carrettiera, Diavola or Quattro Stagioni.
Vesuvius also serve traditional Neapolitan calzone, which is different from the calzone you usually see in England. These calzones are filled and folded and full of tasty ingredients. Unsurprisingly, they’re very popular.
Beyond the pizza and before the pizza, Pasquale keeps the ethos of exceptional authenticity on brand by cooking up a variety of traditional starters from Italy – try triumphant Tris Montanarine, delicious deep fried Frittatina and Grandma’s recipe Parmigiana. But let’s face it, we’re all here for Pasquale’s perfect pizza.
