With two bank holidays behind us and May half term on the horizon, you may well be running out of ways to keep your children entertained this spring. If you’re hoping to plan a day out together, or are looking for other exciting things to do in Leeds, here are some of the best family-friendly activities to enjoy in and around the city in May and June.

Have some train-themed fun at Leeds Industrial Museum, Saturday 27th May-Sunday 4th June

If your little one likes trains, they will love visiting Leeds Industrial Museum over the May half term holidays. Created in partnership with the Friends of Sierra Leone Railway Museum, Trains Trains Trains is a family-friendly event that celebrates Leeds’ rich railway heritage and its international connections. You’ll be able to follow a train-themed trail around the museum all week, while on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, you can get involved with extra activities including tours, storytelling and train-inspired crafts.

 

Tickets cost £5.50 for adults and £3 for children aged 5 and over (under 5s are free)

 

Enjoy a Fun Swim at Bramley Baths, Saturdays 1:30-3pm & Sundays 11am-12:30pm

If you’re looking for a swimming pool with a little more atmosphere than your local leisure centre, Bramley Baths might be just the place. This community-run pool was established in 1904 and retains many of its original Edwardian features. On Saturdays and Sundays, you can enjoy a children’s Fun Swim here. These relaxed sessions are lots of fun for swimmers of all levels of ability as the pool is filled with floats.

 

Fun Swims must be booked in advance and cost £5 for adults and £3 for children over 5 (under 5s are free)

 

Play at the Tiny Tetley Studio, Wednesdays-Sundays 10am-5pm

Located on the second floor of the Tetley gallery, the Tiny Tetley Studio is an immersive, artist-designed play area. This unique space was created by artist and early years specialist Stephanie Jefferies and is somewhere families can spend time together while letting their imaginations run free. The studio features cool and colourful play structures built in collaboration with Three Create, as well as a bespoke sound installation by Buffalo Sound Design. It’s also well-equipped for those bringing babies and toddlers, with baby change facilities and crocheted breastfeeding aids from Leeds Bosom Buddies.

Meet the Volsung Vikings at Lotherton Hall, Saturday 3rd-Sunday 4th June

In 805AD the Vikings came to Lotherton, where they established a stronghold before sailing up the Ouse to their capital city of York. Now, these Norse invaders will return in the form of reenactment group the Volsung Vikings. For two days, visitors to Lotherton can explore living history encampments, listening to the Vikings’ stories and learning about how they lived and fought. You’ll be able to witness a thrilling battle and watch a weapon-themed show and tell. Young warriors will have a great time dressing up and can even train as a member of the Viking army.

 

Viking activities are included with general admission, which costs £9 for adults and £4.50 for children aged 5-18 (under 5s are free)

 

Make music together at Sound Fun, Leeds Art Gallery, Saturday 27th-Wednesday 31st May 11am-3pm 

If you’d like to try making some music this May half term, Leeds Art Gallery will be running a Sound Fun workshop each day through the first half of the holidays. Led by artist in residence Samra Mayanja, these playful sessions will include creative karaoke and sound drawing. You’ll have a chance to sing and should expect jumbled up lyrics and lots of experimentation.

Explore nature with your preschooler at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays 9:30-11:15am

Situated in the city of Leeds, Meanwood Valley Urban Farm is a real working farm with animals to meet and gardens and woodland to explore. On Saturdays and some weekdays, children aged five and under can join the Silverwood Adventures Forest Cubs to enjoy outdoor activities here. This friendly group is run by a Level 3 Forest School Practitioner, who provides a safe and private space where families can relax and play together. Little ones can get messy in the mud kitchen, spend a quiet moment in the reading corner or try to complete the obstacle course. You’ll also be able to wander through the woods or have a hot drink and a marshmallow biscuit sandwich by the fire while chatting to other like-minded parents.

 

Sessions cost £6 and are free for babies under 6 months

 

Get active at Clip N Climb, Holbeck, Open every day

Whether you’re a climbing pro or are trying out a new hobby, Clip ‘n Climb in Holbeck has a range of brilliant indoor climbing challenges to suit all ages and levels of ability. At the start of your session, you’ll be shown the ropes with a full safety briefing. You can then start to scale the arena’s many exhilarating walls. Clip ‘n Climb is suitable for children aged over two and a half but under fours must be accompanied by an adult who isn’t climbing themselves. No prior experience is necessary – you just need a head for heights.

 

Climbing sessions cost £11.50 for toddlers and £14 for all other ages 

 

Celebrate Love Your Zoo Week at Tropical World, Monday 29th May-Friday 3rd June

Tropical World has been providing visitors with the opportunity to see rare and unusual plants and animals since the 1980s. This miniature zoo in Roundhay Park is home to a whole host of fascinating creatures, from butterflies, birds and fish to reptiles and small mammals – you can even meet meerkats and a slow loris here. To mark the occasion of BIAZA’s Love Your Zoo Week, Tropical World will be helping to highlight the important role that local zoos play in conservation, education and research. During the last week of May, you can learn interesting facts about your favourite creatures here with talks from Tropical World’s knowledgeable keepers.

Encourage your older kids to get sewing at Bowery Visual Arts, Sunday 25th June & Sunday 9th July 10:30am-12:30pm

Throughout the early summer, Bowery Visual Arts will be running a series of sewing workshops aimed at children aged 11+. These Kids Sunday Sew sessions will provide an opportunity to get creative with fabric while making something to take home and treasure. Each workshop lasts for two hours, during which time children can be left. Complete beginners are welcome and if your child hasn’t used a sewing machine before qualified Art and Design Technology teacher Sandra will be on hand to give extra help. On Sunday 25th June, Sandra will be helping students to make their own beach bags, while on the 9th July they can craft a spotty rainbow garland.

 

Kids Sunday Sew sessions costs £15 per child and can be booked online in advance 

 

Plant your own tomatoes at Temple Newsam, Wednesday 31st May 1-3pm

If you would like to inspire your budding gardeners, Temple Newsam is offering children the chance to grow their own tomatoes this spring. On the 31st May, you can drop into the park’s 18th-century walled garden and plant your own seeds, which you’ll then be able to take away with you. All materials will be supplied free of charge and there’s no need to book in advance.
