In recent years there has been a rising interest in getting back to nature. As an antidote to the modern world, the organic appeal of plants and wildlife have spread far and wide. And at a time when the benefits of the great outdoors are acutely appreciated, so too is the importance to connect with it.
In and around Leeds, there are miles of green spaces to enjoy, and many ways to create your own piece of nature in the city; from growing your own on the allotment, to getting out in the garden, to planting on the windowsill; so here are some great garden centres and nurseries in Leeds to help you on your way…
High Trees Garden Centre – In its fortieth year High Trees remains family run and true to its traditions. A fine selection of plants, trees and shrubs are stocked at this large Horsforth site, where beginners and experts can also pick up necessary accessories for their green fingers. The attached Bistro Le Jardin makes the trip all the more nourishing too.
Palmer Plants – Since 1982 the Palmers have been growing plants and growing their business equally impressively. From a small nursery to a stocked garden centre, the focus remains firmly on the produce, and a trip to Calverley will fill your natural needs with the best trees, shrubs and bedding, grown by their own fair hands.
Crag House Farm – From a working farm in Cookridge, Crag House has transformed itself into a handsome place to visit for a few good reasons. Holding its own alongside a farm shop and a restaurant is a garden nursery with a range of quality plants, seeds and bulbs, for both the indoor and outdoor gardener.
Langlands Garden Centre – This large garden centre in Whinmoor, which also has branches in York and Sheffield, carries all the benefits of its scale without losing its heritage. Still a family business in its seventh decade, Langlands retains a personal touch and gardening expertise whilst expanding into food, furniture and fish. As its slogan rightly says: more than just a garden centre.
The Arium – Nearby, The Arium is Leeds’ biggest plant nursery, supplying the city with greenery everywhere. At the forefront of the Leeds In Bloom and Feed Leeds initiatives, businesses, schools and community groups proudly display The Arium’s Chelsea Flower Show award winning plants, of which up to three million are grown every year!
As if that weren’t enough, there are more at Garforth Garden Centre, Woodend Nurseries in Great Preston, Riverside Plants in Shadwell, Swincar Nurseries in Guiseley, plus other unique stores in Leeds at which you can pick up your plants and support your local businesses.
Visit horticultural heroes Mr & Mrs Singh at Chana Store in Yeadon, check out The Green Yard at Headingley’s HEART for your hardy perennials, and head to The Plant Point in The Corn Exchange to take home your own urban jungle.
With all these places, there’s never been a better time to plant your gardening future. We’re rooting for you.
