On Saturday 6th May, Charles III will be crowned King of the United Kingdom. Whether you’d like to watch a live screening of the coronation service, try your hand at some royal-themed crafts or enjoy a meal that’s fit for a king, you’ll find many great ways to celebrate in Leeds. Here are some of the best events and activities taking place around the city this bank holiday weekend.
Watch a live screening in Millenium Square, Saturday 6th May
If you aren’t able to travel to London for the coronation, you can watch the historic day unfolding live in Leeds’ city centre. The whole occasion, including the procession and ceremony, will be shown on a big screen in Millenium Square. Limited seating is available on a first come, first served basis and a great atmosphere is guaranteed.

Take part in royal-themed activities at Harewood House, Saturday 6th-Monday 8th May
Throughout the coronation weekend, Harewood House will be getting into the celebratory spirit with children’s crafts and other royal-themed things to do. Harewood’s own links with the coronation ceremony will be explored through a display in the servant’s hall, featuring the Lascelles family coronation robes and other precious items from the house’s fascinating collection. There’ll be the chance to indulge in a luxurious afternoon tea, which can be served on the house’s south facing terrace or in its stately billiards room. Adults will also be able to make their own red, white and blue rag wreath in a workshop run by Yorkshire Blankets.
Tickets from £16 for adults and £9 for children (under 4s are free). The rag wreath workshop costs £50 pp. and must be booked in advance.
Enjoy a garden party at The Mustard Pot, Saturday 6th May
The Mustard Pot’s garden party is the perfect option for those who would like to spend the day of the coronation socialising. Held in the pub’s large beer garden in Chapel Allerton, this informal gathering starts at 12pm and will feature live music, along with activities for children such as a bouncy castle and a face painting stand. Those attending will be able to order food from The Mustard Pot’s kitchen and drinks from its well-stocked bar, which serves a range of craft ales, wines and spirits, summery fruit spritzes and Bellinis.

Treat yourself to afternoon tea at The Mansion, Sunday 7th May
Residing in a gorgeous Grade II-listed Regency building in the heart of Roundhay Park, The Mansion provides an elegant setting in which to celebrate the coronation. On Sunday 7th May, you’ll be able to enjoy a special afternoon tea here. This comes with a selection of dainty finger sandwiches, as well as savouries like roast king prawn skewers, pork and leek sausage rolls and a feta and sweet pea tartlet. You can then move on to golden sultana and orange scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserve, followed by delicious cakes and treats, including millionaires shortcake or champagne and strawberry jelly. Each afternoon tea comes with your choice of English Breakfast or Earl Grey tea or Dine’s speciality blend coffee.

Celebrate with a Big Lunch in Morley, Sunday 7th May
This May, the residents of Morley are going all out with a fabulous Big Lunch in honour of the coronation. Taking place at Morley Town Hall on the 7th May, this family-friendly day out offers lots to see and do, from re-watching the service at Westminster Abbey to taking a ride in a real horse-drawn carriage. There will be live music from Leeds Musical Theatre Choir, Carly Wood and Tingley Brass Band, and food stalls from local traders and a pop-up cafe. Children can have fun with face painting or make their own clay crown with The Little Biscuit Pottery Painting Studio. Have a coronation picnic at Temple Newsam, Monday 8th May
If you’re wondering how to spend your bank holiday Monday, Temple Newsam will be extending the weekend’s festivities with a coronation picnic. Starting at 11am, this event will include family-friendly entertainment with special activities to take part in around the house and farm. Guests are invited to bring their own picnic along to eat in the park. Access to this event is free with general admission to the house.

Get active with a Coronation Canter at Kirkstall Abbey, Monday 8th May
If you love to run, you can make the historic occasion of Charles III’s coronation even more memorable by achieving a new personal best in Kirkstall Abbey’s Coronation Canter. This themed run starts at 9am in the abbey’s grounds and there are six different distances to choose from – ultra, marathon, half marathon, 10k, 5k or a 1 mile fun run. The canter is chip timed with well-stocked feed stations every three miles. After you’ve crossed the finish line, you will be rewarded with a celebratory afternoon tea and a medal and goody bag to take home.

Sample a Royal Feasting Menu at Angelica, Friday 5th-Monday 8th May
If you’d like to dine like a king or queen, the Angelica brasserie in Leeds will be serving a special royal-themed menu over the coronation weekend. This comes with a glass of fizz and features starters such as leek and sage veloute with spiced hazelnut and potato beignet, or barbequed hispi cabbage, accompanied by paprika aioli, crispy parsnip and onions. You can then tuck into delicious mains like cod schnitzel, pan fried chicken breast or roasted parsnip risotto. If you have any room left afterwards, Angelica’s regal dessert offering includes a white chocolate blondie with frozen blackcurrant yoghurt or comforting sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream.

See knights on horseback at the Royal Armouries, Saturday 6th-Monday 8th May
The Royal Armouries will be celebrating His Majesty King Charles III’s coronation with a weekend of free displays and special performances. On Saturday 6th of May, armoured knights will parade on horseback around Leeds Dock, recreating the Ceremony of the King’s Champion which last took place in 1821. Over the bank holiday weekend, visitors here will also be able to see replicas of the crown jewels and learn more about the arms and armour of five different kings – William the Conqueror, Edward I, Edward III, Henry V and Henry VIII. Children can decorate their own crown to take home, or enter a competition to design a new suit of armour for a modern monarch. The Armouries collections will provide inspiration and they’ll have plenty of time to get creative as the closing date isn’t until the 2nd July.
