North Far: An Introduction

So, what is North Far? North Far refers to the area stretching from the edge of North Leeds and outwards to the border of North Yorkshire. For many, this area of Leeds is a hotspot for those hoping to swap the city landscape for something a little more rural; here, you won’t struggle to find sprawling greenery as well as market towns holding weekly local produce markets, and traditional independent high-streets. In North Far, you’ll find some of Leeds’ most treasured spaces when it comes to escaping the hustle and bustle of the city. In this short series for North Far, we’ll take a closer look at what some of these spaces have to offer, such as Horsforth, Ilkley, Otley and Wetherby. But we must give an honourable mention to the smaller towns and villages, of Adel, Harewood, Guiseley and Tadcaster, which play a big role in making this fantastic area of Leeds so well-loved.

The first stop on the route through North Far is the village of Adel. Just minutes away from the busy outskirts of Leeds city centre, and you’re well into the idyllic suburb of Adel; as well as being a popular area for many Leeds residents, the village also plays host to a number of independent shops and eateries which prove incredibly popular for locals. The neighbouring village of Eccup offers even more spots for walking and cycling with rolling fields, country lanes, a reservoir, and views for miles.

Further on from Eccup is Harewood; renowned for the opulent 18^th-century mansion, Harewood House, the Harewood estate also boats expansive landscaped grounds as well as a family-friendly farm and bird garden which is even home to parrots and flamingos. In the village, you’ll find more green spaces as well as a village pub, library, and hall.

Guiseley welcomes travellers from near and far from Leeds/Bradford Airport with a true taste of Yorkshire, with a serving of fish and chips. Once known for housing the biggest fish and chip shop in the country, Guiseley is another popular residential area with a real community spirit; boasting independent shops, cafes, and restaurants, including the ever-popular Murgatroyds fish and chip restaurant.

Tadcaster has a rich history as a market town dating back to 1270; the markets continue to this day and are held weekly. The town is also the proud home to the John Smiths Brewery, continuing its long association with the brewing industry because of the quality and accessibility of the local water supply.
