Our train pulled up in Headingley. We stepped onto the platform, zipped up our jackets and pulled on our hats. We were now walking towards I am Doner, an independent kebab house with tightly run operations in both Headingly and Harrogate. Promoting no more dirty kebabs, the food here is simple, fresh and tasty. Options are varied with a menu bursting with doner meat providing options from salads to rice boxes. Service is excellent as we ordered the Berlin House Special. I am Doner was getting busy but we managed to secure two of the window seats. Watching Headingley pass by outside we chatted briefly about the students, the lunchtime workers, the people young and the people old all now arriving for their hard earned doner kebab. It was definitely a popular time to arrive. Our House Special order of an incredibly fresh grilled chicken, doner, falafel, grilled halloumi, feta, carrot, coriander and grilled vegetable kebab arrived in a tightly sealed and deliciously baked bread. It tasted like every great kebab you will have ever tried. Expect the usual chilli, mint and garlic sauce to make this a food feast worth remembering. Vegan friendly kebabs are available with offerings from falafel and even a seitan meat alternative. Like many kebabs expect fries as a side. The Special Street Cart fries for example comes topped with grilled chicken, pickled cabbage, tomato, red onion, falafel, halloumi lemon and garlic.
We thanked our hosts at I am Doner before heading back into the January cold. The streets seemed busier than when we had first arrived. The coffee shops and restaurants were now full as we headed back to catch our train home. As we waited on the platform the clouds were beginning to gather above. As we stood and waited we agreed that this had been a food adventure which had taken us to some of the best underground and sometimes least championed eats across our city.
Just remember – next time you are deciding on bite to eat, make sure you consider the reserved and unassuming meal of a kebab when making up your mind.
