The culinary quality and variety in Leeds has improved unrecognisably in recent years. Where once there were gaps in many markets, now most cuisines from every continent are readily available. Except, perhaps, for one obvious omission: a proper sandwich.
Sure, there have been countless sandwich shops feeding the people of Leeds for decades, and a tasty butty can be enjoyed if you know where to go. But for that guaranteed epic New York style sub, freshly baked and fully filled, the city has been lacking. Until this year…
At the start of 2022 Don’t Feed The Dog moved in to Roland’s to serve up their glorious sandwiches and sides. This relaxed bar on the vibrant Call Lane is a perfect fit for the food; generous and unpretentious, oozing effortless quality, comfort and cool.
The name Don’t Feed The Dog is inspired by Roland’s dog-friendly attitude too; as a lover of dogs there are often one or two happily sniffing about the place. However, for our furry friends and for you, it’s advisable not to give them the good stuff: Don’t Feed The Dog.
So, what makes these sandwiches so special? Well, let’s run through the evolving menu (which changes bi-weekly) and salivate. First up was the Bunga Bunga: this popular choice is packed with prosciutto, salami, mortadella, provolone, rocket, giardiniera and parmesan crust. Next, they travelled to Asia for their favourite bahn mi, available in pork or vegan mushroom; then to Africa, for a Moroccan flavoured vegan treat.
Indeed, vegan and veggie options are plentiful, with stunning sandwiches, from squashed grilled cheese toasties to marinated aubergine apollonas, filled with goodness and pleasure. And meat eaters can rejoice too, in beef dips, chicken parmos and a whole lot more. You can even get fishy with specials such as the shrimp po boy. All are topped with salads and sauces and packed into freshly baked bread from Bondgate Bakery. Delicious.
Eating this in at Roland’s is the ideal setting, paired with a drink from their extensive list of craft beers, fine wines and renowned cocktails, and adding sides that include 15 hour chips and oyster mushroom wings. But you can also take out at your convenience, and their lunch offer may tempt you to do just that.
For only a tenner each, a mega sandwich deal will be delivered to any office in Leeds city centre. You can pre-order this ultimate feast by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or messaging @dontfeedtdog on Instagram. Simply tell them where you are, when you want it, what you’d like and for how many people, then you’ll all be tucking into the best new office lunch in town.
In Roland’s and out, Don’t Feed The Dog do feed the people of Leeds handsomely. It might literally not be a dog’s dinner, but it is metaphorically the dogs bollocks.
