Every now and then we come across somebody or somewhere doing something just for the love of it – and we found a perfect example of this last week at The Domino.

Every Tuesday, the guys there do something called ‘break even liquid’ where they choose a high-end bottle of liquor (usually from Latitude Wines – a great independent purveyor of fine booze on The Calls) that they sell at cost price in the bar. They divide the cost of the bottle by the volume, meaning you get to try a measure of otherwise alarmingly expensive liquor at a very reasonable price with literally no mark-up.

The jazz bar is renowned for its love for whisky in particular. As die hard whisky fans, they came up with this idea so that they could 1) have an excuse to buy the really expensive stuff and 2) create something exciting for the liquor-loving folks of Leeds to enjoy.

Co-owner of The Domino, Matthew said: “The whisky drinkers in Leeds love the break-even-liquid idea and so do we – it means we all get to try amazing whiskies we’d never usually get to taste – I’m certainly not in the habit of spending £20+ on a measure of whisky in a bar and I know I’d struggle to justify a £150+ bottle each week to my wife!”

Although their main focus is usually whisky, they also get other spirits such as Cognac and special rums. This break-even-liquid initiative has given us all in Leeds the chance to try the really good stuff and has proven incredibly popular, with the bottle usually sold out by Thursday.

So if you’re a liquor-lover and want to be able to tick some fine whiskies and rums off your list, get down to The Domino in The Grand Arcade and try it out!

(Insider tip – if you want a heads-up what their break-even-liquid is each week, they announce it in their weekly email – signup at http://thedomino.co.uk)
