Christmas is filled with traditions, no more so than in the food we eat. There’s the turkey roast dinner, the sprouts, the mince pies, the pigs in blankets, the Boxing Day curries, the endless leftovers in sandwiches, and so much more. This year, several eateries across Leeds are playing with these traditions, embracing them and twisting them, to create quirky menus in cosy settings that enhance the Christmas meal out. Check out these seven:
It may only be its fifth Christmas, but Bundobust have already made quite a mark on Leeds’ Christmas grub with their annually anticipated sprout bhajis! This acclaimed bar has become renowned for its awesome Indian tapas and belting beers, and as well as the aforementioned best way ever of serving everyone’s favourite festive veg, they are also offering themed cocktails such as The Grinch, and a desi style December group menu that both fits with the season and brings a welcome spicy relief.
On the edge of Leeds city centre, this understated yet hip bar has gained a reputation for its cracking Sunday roast dinners. It is therefore no surprise that The Brunswick provides an equally ace Christmas dinner; think lashings of homely flavours elevated to expert heights, with added seasonal touches such as chestnut pate and a special tostada. Bring enough of you and the upstairs could be your perfect private dining party!
I Am Doner
In its relatively short life so far, I Am Doner has successfully brought proper kebabs to Leeds, with homemade breads and sauces, high quality meats, and tasty veg and vegan options. This Headingley stop off excels itself at Christmas, topping last year’s Christmas Dinner Doner with this year’s Doner & Blitzen Kebab; filled with lean reindeer meat and an array of seasonal toppings, from sauerkraut and lingonberry to stuffing and gravy!
New to Leeds in 2018, fab vegan eatery Knaves Kitchen popped up in Oporto to serve delicious plant based junk food. Taking the opportunity to show that cruelty-free food can be filled with festive joy, they have now designed a cracking Christmas menu. Amongst a mouthwatering and inventive selection of themed dishes, there is Christmas wurst, seitan wellington, rosemary roasties, boozy root veg, and Christmas pudding truffle. The result is deep seasonal flavours in a fun setting that could convert some and will delight all.
Where better than a traditional pub to settle down to a prawn cocktail starter, roast turkey main, Christmas pudding and cheeseboard afters? Well, Leeds’ famous old boozer The Adelphi is delivering just that in all but name on its festive menu, alongside other crowdpleasers such as pumpkin soup, herby salmon and chocolate tart. Welcome in, snuggle up and fill out.
The popular plush restaurant inside Headrow House is known for making masterful dishes with seasonal ingredients and that combination makes their winter menu rather special. There’s game meats and guinea fowl alongside hardy veggies like sprouts and kale, plus sumptuous sweets that will surely warm even the coldest of grinch hearts.
The Swine That Dines
Ok, so at the beginning of this article we said that sprout bhajis are the best way ever of serving everyone’s favourite festive veg… well, they are, but then so are The Swine That Dines’ variations! In fritters, with honey mustard dill… the naysayers will never look at a sprout the same again! Plus, this intimate and inventive small plates restaurant keeps up the festive flavours across December’s seven course menu with the likes of horseradish, clementines and oozing cheeses. Bring your own booze, too; time for an after-dinner lie down.
